Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, led by Prof. Amer Ramesh, used data from India's Aditya-L1 solar mission to quantify the energy sources that heat the Sun's corona. Their study, published in the The Astrophysical Journal, analyzed a coronal mass ejection on 5 August 2024 observed by Aditya-L1's Visible Emission Line Coronagraph. They found that magnetic field reconnection supplies about 93% of the corona's energy, while surface wave motions contribute only 7%. This helps explain why the corona remains millions of degrees hotter than the Sun's surface despite frequent energy losses from eruptions. The findings provide a benchmark for future solar physics research and improve understanding of space weather that can affect Earth's technology.
