Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Rolls-Royce Holdings announced on 14 August 2026 that they successfully demonstrated a modern aero gas turbine operating on 100% hydrogen across a fully simulated flight cycle, including take-off, cruise, and landing. This industry-first test is the culmination of a four-year hydrogen propulsion programme initially launched by Rolls-Royce and EasyJet in 2022, with TCS joining in 2024 as the engineering partner. The tests validated critical hydrogen propulsion technologies across combustion, fuel systems, and engine controls. TCS contributed expertise in fuel system and engine controls integration, hydrogen combustion analysis, test preparation, validation, data analytics, risk management, and detailed design. The demonstration involved collaboration with EasyJet, United States — NASA, the UK United Kingdom — Health and Safety Executive (HSE), and other industry partners. Aviation accounts for approximately 2-3% of global CO2 emissions, and hydrogen propulsion has the potential to eliminate in-flight CO2 emissions when deployed at scale.
