Kano out-of-school children drop 11.5%

The Nigeria — Kano State Ministry of Education released the Nigeria — Kano State Out-of-School Children Survey Report 2026, revealing that 875,593 children are out of school across the state's 44 local government areas. This represents a reduction of 113,641 children, or 11.5%, compared with the 989,234 recorded in the 2023 UNICEF data. The report was presented by Commissioner for Education Haruna Abubakar at a dissemination event attended by government officials, development partners, civil society organizations, and community leaders. The commissioner attributed the progress to sustained investment and interventions by the Nigeria — Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, including school construction, provision of materials, and enrollment drives. The new figure is based on a statewide survey providing verified and disaggregated data, unlike previous estimates. The ministry urged stakeholders to use the data for evidence-based planning and to intensify efforts to enroll and retain children in school.
