India defence modernisation self-reliance priority

On the eve of India's 80th Independence Day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the armed forces via Akashvani, declaring military modernisation driven by a self-reliant defence sector as the government's top priority. He highlighted that domestic defence production rose from Rs 46,000 crore in 2014 to a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, a nearly four-fold increase. Defence exports surged from Rs 686 crore in FY 2013-14 to Rs 38,424 crore in FY 2025-26, an increase of over 5,500%, with 145 exporters serving over 80 countries. The defence budget increased from Rs 2.53 lakh crore in FY 2013-14 to Rs 7.85 lakh crore in FY 2026-27, with capital expenditure growing to Rs 2.19 lakh crore and R&D budget rising 90% to Rs 29,100 crore. Singh also noted that the India — Defence Acquisition Council granted Acceptance of Necessity for projects worth over Rs 8.75 lakh crore, and highlighted successful tests of advanced missiles and hypersonic technology, positioning India among leading nations in future warfare capabilities. He reiterated the government's commitment to welfare of defence personnel and increased opportunities for women in the forces.
