A historic drought and record low water levels on the Danube river have forced Hungary's Paks nuclear power plant to operate at about 25% of its capacity. To prevent a shutdown of one of its last two operating turbines, Hungarian authorities, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, began sinking two 80-metre barges in the Danube on August 14-15 to raise the water level by about 20 centimetres. The government also plans to build a riverbed sill, which could raise the water level by up to 1 metre, but that will take weeks. Neighbouring Romania shut down its last working reactor on August 13 due to the low Danube levels. The drought has raised questions in both countries about adapting atomic energy to increasingly extreme climate conditions.
