SpaceX completes $60B Cursor acquisition

SpaceX completed its $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor, the AI coding assistant developed by Cursor (company), on August 14, 2026. The deal, first announced in June, follows an April partnership that included an option to acquire. Cursor's team will join SpaceXAI, SpaceX's AI division formed after its acquisition of Xai earlier in 2026. The acquisition gives SpaceX control of a major developer platform and access to Cursor's engineering talent, while Cursor gains access to SpaceX's large GPU fleet, including the Colossus supercomputer, to train more capable and cost-efficient AI models. The companies had already collaborated on Grok 4.5 and Grok 4.6. Cursor's four co-founders—Michael Truell, Aman Sanger, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark—each became billionaires with estimated net worths of about $2.7 billion. The deal is part of Elon Musk's strategy to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic in the AI coding market. SpaceX's recent IPO raised approximately $75 billion, providing financial capacity for the transaction.
