Canadian National Railway (CN) announced on August 14, 2026, the advancement of its hybrid locomotive development program. Following a successful pilot project, CN now has three hybrid locomotives being tested and plans to convert two additional locomotives into hybrid-electric platforms with AC traction technology by the end of 2026. The pilot achieved up to 50% improvement in fuel efficiency, reduced engine failures, increased horsepower from 3,200 to 3,800 HP, and lower emissions. New features include solid-state battery technology, a 2.8MWh battery system paired with an 800HP Tier 4 engine, and AC traction motors integrated into a DC motor frame. The initiative aims to improve fuel efficiency, reliability, and operational performance while extending asset life and reducing environmental impact.
