UK wildfires may lead to flooding

Wildfires have swept across the United Kingdom, forcing evacuations in Stourbridge, West Midlands, and leading to 54 people being treated by paramedics, with 19 admitted to hospital. Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited the scene and warned that the country could face flooding in the autumn and winter following the dry spell, partly due to El Niño–Southern Oscillation. The United Kingdom — Met Office predicts the dry spell will last until the end of September, with some rain expected but not enough to alleviate drought conditions. Alistair Carmichael, chair of the Commons environment committee, expressed concern about the impact on food security, noting that Britain has a water management problem and that flooding could leave fields under water, reducing water availability for irrigation. The government has mobilized resources through a Commando Battalion for Resolute Action meeting, and there are calls for accelerated clean energy transition to address climate change.
