NGX Weekly Trading Volume Surges 127%
Analysis based on 7 articles · First reported Aug 15, 2026 · Last updated Aug 17, 2026
The surge in trading volume indicates heightened investor activity and liquidity in the Nigerian equities market, though profit-taking led to a weekly decline in the benchmark index. The strong year-to-date performance and sectoral gains suggest continued positive sentiment, but the concentration of trading in a few stocks and the market's moderation may signal short-term volatility.
During the week ended August 14, 2026, trading activity on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) surged sharply, with investors exchanging 12.153 billion shares valued at N176.058 billion across 224,146 deals. This represented a 126.8% increase in traded volume compared to the previous week's 5.359 billion shares worth N139.053 billion. Turnover value rose by 26.6%, while the number of deals declined by about 14.4%. Despite the surge in activity, the broader market closed lower as investors took profits following recent gains. The JSE All-Share Index declined by 1.20% to 242,619.20 points, and market capitalisation fell by 1.19% to N156.624 trillion. The Financial services dominated activity, accounting for 92.25% of total equity turnover by volume and 50.55% by value. Activity was heavily concentrated in three equities: Fortis Global Insurance Plc, Cornerstone Insurance Plc, and Consolidated Hallmark Holdings Plc, which together represented 78.07% of total equity turnover by volume. Lasaco Assurance expanded its share capital by listing 9.236 billion additional ordinary shares on the NGX Daily Official List on August 12, following a rights issue. Despite the weekly decline, the market remains firmly positive for the year, with the JSE All-Share Index recording a year-to-date return of 55.91% as of August 14. Sectoral indices such as the NGX Oil and Gas Index, NGX Premium Index, and NGX Industrial Goods Index have posted even stronger year-to-date gains.
