The divestiture signals Alibaba's commitment to its AI and cloud strategy, potentially boosting investor confidence in its growth prospects. The deal provides Alibaba with capital to invest in AI infrastructure, while CITIC Capital acquires a gaming asset with growth potential outside a conglomerate structure.
Alibaba Group is selling its gaming subsidiary Alibaba Group — Lingxi Games to Asian private equity firm CITIC Capital in a deal valued at more than $1.5 billion. The transaction, reported by Bloomberg News and confirmed by an internal memo, is part of Alibaba's broader restructuring under CEO Eddie Lin to divest non-core assets and focus on artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Alibaba aims to reach $100 billion in AI revenue within five years and recently released its largest AI model, claiming performance comparable to Anthropic's technology. Alibaba Group — Lingxi Games, known for the mobile strategy game Three Kingdoms: Strategy Edition developed with Koei Tecmo, will transfer its roughly 1,200 employees, five self-developed studios, and the 9game platform to Trustar. The sale follows Alibaba's initial marketing of Lingxi in June 2026 with a target valuation of RMB 7-9 billion, which Trustar's winning bid exceeded. Trustar beat out other bidders including Sony — Sony Interactive Entertainment and Century Huatong. The deal underscores Alibaba's strategic pivot toward AI and cloud services, while Trustar gains a gaming operation with development and distribution capabilities.
