The ruling is a minor regulatory setback for Apple in India, potentially affecting its reputation for customer service and warranty practices. The financial impact is negligible for Apple, but it may encourage similar consumer claims and prompt closer scrutiny of warranty denials.
On August 7, 2026, the India — District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (Raipur) in Rohtak, Haryana, ordered Apple India to refund Rs 45,500 to advocate Rajbir Phogat for a defective iPhone 15. Phogat had purchased the phone in January 2024 for Rs 64,999 and reported persistent overheating, Bluetooth, and network issues. Despite multiple attempts at service, including software updates, iCloud storage purchase, and switching from Reliance Industries — Jio to Bharti Airtel, the problems continued. Apple denied a manufacturing defect, claiming unauthorized modifications, but the commission found insufficient technical evidence to support this. The commission also ordered Apple to pay Rs 5,000 for mental agony and Rs 5,000 in litigation costs, with 9% annual interest from June 10, 2024. Phogat must return the handset to Apple upon payment. The order must be complied with within one month.
