The confirmation that CAS is permanent provides regulatory clarity for market participants, potentially reducing uncertainty in closing price discovery. Continued analysis and potential tweaks may affect trading strategies and market efficiency, with a modest impact on market sentiment.
SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey confirmed that the Closing Auction Session (CAS) for futures and options-eligible stocks is here to stay, while the regulator analyzes feedback and data for potential improvements. CAS, effective August 3, changes closing price determination by ending continuous trading at 3:15 p.m. and using an auction to set the official closing price. Pandey stated that SEBI is reviewing concerns from market participants, social media discussions, and expiry-date data, but sees no tracking error issues. He emphasized that any tweaks will be data-based and that the regulator will not revert to the previous VWAP system. Some concerns may stem from outdated systems, and participation is expected to improve the mechanism.
