Edo Assembly Speaker Agbebaku Resigns

Blessing Agbebaku resigned as Speaker of the Nigeria — Lagos State House of Assembly on August 17, 2026, amid moves by lawmakers to impeach him. An impeachment notice reportedly signed by 18 of the 24 lawmakers was presented to him, and he resigned rather than face removal. Yekini Idaiyi, a three-term lawmaker from Akoko-Edo Constituency I, was elected as the new Speaker, following the state's zoning arrangement that allocates the Speakership to Edo North when the governor comes from Edo Central. Idiaye accused Agbebaku of poor leadership and alleged corruption, including prolonged adjournments and inflated costs of vehicles purchased for the Assembly. The Assembly suspended Agbebaku pending investigation, dissolved political office holders attached to his office, and directed him to hand over official documents. Additionally, the Assembly removed Jonathan Ibhamawu as Majority Leader and Adeh Isibor as Deputy Majority Leader, replacing them with Ojezele Sunday and Eugene Inegbebor respectively. The leadership change is seen as an effort to support Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration.
