The launch strengthens cross-border remittance infrastructure between Qatar and India, potentially increasing the efficiency and reducing costs of the $5.8 billion Qatar-to-India remittance corridor. It also expands the reach of India's UPI ecosystem internationally, supporting the growth of digital payment infrastructure and financial inclusion.
On August 15, 2026, Qatar — Qatar Post and India — India Post launched PosTransfer, a UPI-powered remittance service enabling customers in Qatar to send money directly to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India. The service, developed with the Universal Postal Union's Interconnection Platform (UPU-IP) and National Payments Corporation of India — National Payments Corporation of India (NIPL), allows transfers ranging from QAR 10 to QAR 4,000 (up to Rs 1 lakh) per transaction, with a flat fee of QAR 15. Recipients must activate the facility in their UPI app to receive funds. The launch coincided with India's Independence Day, and Sandeep Kumar, Charge d'Affaires at the Indian Embassy in Qatar, visited a Qatar — Qatar Post outlet in Doha to mark the occasion. The service aims to benefit the large Indian community in Qatar (over 800,000 people) by providing a convenient and affordable remittance channel. The Qatar-India corridor is part of a broader effort to modernize international postal financial services and expand digital financial cooperation. India — India Post is also working with other postal operators to launch additional PosTransfer corridors. The launch comes amid a debate in India over UPI fees, with recent legislation removing the blanket restriction on charges for digital payments, though consumer UPI transactions remain free for now.
