The investment signals strong confidence in construction automation, potentially boosting the sector and related robotics stocks. Gravis's valuation jump from $23 million raised in November 2025 to a $1 billion valuation highlights rapid growth in physical AI for construction, likely attracting further investor interest.
On August 17, 2026, SoftBank Group announced a $200 million Series A investment in Gravis Robotics, a Zurich-based startup spun out of ETH Zurich in 2022. The round, described as the largest in construction robotics history, values Gravis at $1 billion. Gravis develops the Gravis Rack, a retrofit autonomy system for excavators and heavy machinery, compatible with brands including Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, and others. The funding will support global expansion, hiring, and deployment of autonomous construction equipment. SoftBank had previously explored acquiring Gravis for over $500 million but instead made a non-acquisitive investment. Gravis has also been selected to lead an $8 million UK government-backed CAM Pathfinder project with Flannery Plant Hire, supporting Britain's $716 billion infrastructure pipeline. The investment aligns with SoftBank's broader robotics strategy, including its acquisition of ABB's industrial robotics division and the formation of Robo HD.
