India's progress toward self-reliance in electronics components reduces import dependence and strengthens its position in global supply chains, potentially attracting investment and boosting domestic manufacturing. The export of PCBs to China signals growing competitiveness, which could positively impact Indian electronics companies and the broader economy.

Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw announced at the 5th tranche of the Electronic Components Manufacturing schemes (ECMS) that India has achieved 100% domestic capability in enclosures, relays, and optical transceivers, and has begun exporting printed circuit boards (PCBs) to China. India also meets 75% of optical connector demand, 60% of lithium-ion cell demand, 80% of laminate demand, and 55% of transducer demand domestically, with permanent magnets at 40% and capacitors at 20% self-sufficiency. Two companies received approval for domestic capital equipment manufacturing. Of 106 approved projects under the incentive push, 38 have begun manufacturing and 16 are under construction, generating over 74,000 direct jobs and an estimated 2.5 lakh indirect jobs. Vaishnaw outlined four priorities for the industry: building design capabilities, complete indigenous supply chains, Six Sigma quality and lean manufacturing, and workforce development, calling for a tenfold increase in structured training efforts.
