India approves citrus cold-treatment options

After nearly a decade of negotiations, India approved additional cold-treatment options for fresh citrus imports from South Africa, a move that improves phytosanitary market access and gives exporters greater logistical flexibility. The approval, announced on August 18, 2026, follows sustained technical engagement between South African and Indian authorities. Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp welcomed the development, highlighting the role of advanced technology in overcoming trade barriers. The Citrus Growers Association of Southern Africa (CGA) credited the South Africa — Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and Citrus Research International for their efforts. While the new treatment options address technical barriers, the CGA noted that Most-Favoured-Nation tariffs of approximately 25-30% continue to disadvantage South African exporters compared to Southern Hemisphere competitors with preferential arrangements. The CGA called for work with the South Africa — Department of Trade, Industry and Competition to address tariff barriers and improve competitiveness. Positive developments in the SACU-India Preferential Trade Agreement process could further enhance market access. India, with a population of about 1.47 billion, represents significant growth potential for South African citrus, which is counter-seasonal to India's domestic production. South Africa exported 2.9 million tonnes of citrus in 2025, becoming the world's top citrus exporter.
