The partnership is expected to enhance Smith+Nephew's position in the surgical robotics market, potentially driving future revenue growth. It also strengthens Imperial College London's reputation as a leader in medical technology research, which may attract further industry collaborations and funding.
Smith+Nephew, a global medical technology company, and Imperial College London have launched a five-year partnership to establish a new university technology centre for robotic surgery for musculoskeletal conditions. The centre, located within Imperial's Hamlyn Centre, will bring together Smith+Nephew engineers with academic researchers to accelerate the translation of breakthroughs in computer vision and sensing into advanced, less invasive robotic surgery techniques. This marks Smith+Nephew's first such centre within a university and Imperial's first industry centre in medical technology. The centre will be led by Professor Ferdinando Rodriguez y Baena and will support a senior postdoctoral researcher and up to seven fully-funded PhD studentships. Research will focus on markerless registration and tracking and real-time computer vision to make robotic surgery more accessible beyond specialist centres.
