The acceptance of the permit application is a positive development for Monumental Energy, potentially enhancing its asset portfolio in the Taranaki Basin and supporting its share price. However, the permit is not yet granted, and the impact on the broader market is limited given the early-stage nature of the exploration.
Monumental Energy Corporation announced that its application for petroleum exploration permit PEP61554, covering the Tirua Point application area in New Zealand's Taranaki Basin, has been accepted by New Zealand — Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and will proceed to government review. The application was submitted in May 2026 by Monumental, private company 3TCF, and New Zealand Energy Corporation, the proposed operator. The competing-application period closed on August 12, 2026, with no competing applications received. Upon permit grant, Monumental expects to hold a 60% interest, with 3TCF holding 30% and NZEC holding 10%. The area covers approximately 245 square kilometres and contains two identified gas-condensate prospects: Mauku Northeast and Mangatoa. The permit is not yet granted; government review is pending. CEO Maximilian Sali expressed confidence that the acceptance is a step toward securing the permit and could lead to a re-rating of the share price.
