The investment signals strong investor confidence in India's live entertainment sector, potentially boosting valuations for BookMyShow and its competitors. KKR's backing may enhance BookMyShow's ability to expand and compete, while also highlighting the attractiveness of India's consumer entertainment market to global private equity.
Global investment firm KKR & Co. has signed definitive agreements to acquire a minority stake in BookMyShow, India's leading ticketing and live entertainment platform. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, and the deal is subject to customary regulatory approvals. The investment aims to support BookMyShow's growth as it scales its live entertainment business and deepens its full-stack offering across India. BookMyShow, established in 2007 and owned by Ivy Entertainment, has evolved from an online movie ticketing platform into a full-stack entertainment company, operating in over 700 towns and cities in India and expanding internationally. The company's live entertainment division, BookMyShow Live, has brought major properties such as Lollapalooza India, U2's The Joshua Tree Tour, and performances by Coldplay and Ed Sheeran to India. KKR's investment adds BookMyShow to its India portfolio, which includes Medicover Hospitals, Lighthouse Learning, VT Cosmetics, GE HealthCare, Darwinbox, and Rebel Foods. The deal comes amid a rapidly growing Indian entertainment market, with competition intensifying after Eternal Limited (Zomato's parent) acquired Paytm's entertainment and ticketing business in 2024. BookMyShow's revenue rose 43% to Rs 1,397 crore in FY24, with profit increasing 28% to Rs 109 crore. Avendus Capital acted as exclusive financial adviser and Trilegal as legal adviser to BookMyShow.
