Gujarat approves 12-hour shifts for Micron

The India — Gujarat state government has granted approval for Micron Technology's Sanand facility to operate 12-hour work shifts, the first such approval in the state, while maintaining the statutory 48-hour weekly working limit. The decision, made under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH) Code 2020, aims to support continuous cleanroom operations in semiconductor manufacturing and bolster India — Gujarat's position as a semiconductor hub. The approval is subject to strict safeguards: workers may work up to 12 hours per day only if weekly hours do not exceed 48, with remaining days as paid leave, and only with voluntary written consent. The facility is expected to assemble tens of millions of chips in 2026, scaling to hundreds of millions annually from 2027. India — Gujarat has secured six major semiconductor projects under the India — India Semiconductor Mission, attracting investments of nearly Rs 1.4 lakh crore and expected to generate around 50,000 jobs.
