The expansion is expected to boost cross-border e-commerce for African merchants, potentially increasing transaction volumes and revenue for Standard Bank and UnionPay. It may also enhance the adoption of digital payments in the region, benefiting the broader financial services and e-commerce sectors.
Standard Bank and UnionPay International (UPI) have expanded UnionPay e-commerce acceptance across nine African markets: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. This expansion enables nearly 900 participating merchants to accept secure online payments from UnionPay cardholders, building on a collaboration announced in 2024. The move aims to strengthen digital commerce across Africa by offering more payment choice, reducing checkout friction, and serving international travellers and cross-border shoppers. UnionPay cards are accepted in 183 countries and regions, including 51 in Africa, with approximately 7 million cards issued across the continent. The partnership leverages Standard Bank's African presence to connect merchants to regional and global customer flows, supporting trade and commerce. Executives Bill Blackie of Standard Bank and Chen Feng of UnionPay highlighted the importance of trusted international payment methods for African businesses' growth.
