The price hike may dampen consumer demand for premium foldable smartphones in India, potentially affecting Samsung's sales volumes. The broader memory chip shortage is expected to increase component costs across the industry, pressuring margins for smartphone makers and potentially leading to higher retail prices and reduced shipments.
Samsung Electronics is set to increase the prices of its latest foldable smartphones in India, including the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8, due to rising memory chip costs. The devices, priced between Rs 1.25 lakh and Rs 2.6 lakh, saw record pre-orders of nearly 2.71 lakh units within 72 hours of launch. Samsung has been absorbing a significant portion of the cost increases, as stated by JB Park, President and CEO for Southwest Asia, who described the cost burden as 'humongous'. The company has also introduced long-tenure zero-cost EMI options to cushion the impact on consumers. Industry analysts, including Abhilash Kumar of Smart Analytics Global, expect the global memory shortage to lead to annual shipment declines in the Indian smartphone market in Q3 and Q4 2026.
