Tinubu directs EFCC funds to NELFUND

President Bola Tinubu has directed that all legally cleared and unencumbered funds recovered by the Nigeria — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) be channelled to the Nigeria — Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to strengthen its financial sustainability and expand access to tertiary education. The directive, announced by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, also includes funds from the Unclaimed Dividends Trust Fund and the Dormant Account Trust Fund, subject to legal compliance. The Attorney-General of the Federation, in collaboration with the Nigeria — Ministry of finance, the Germany — Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, and the United Kingdom — Debt Management Office, will work out the modalities for implementation. The Nigeria — Executive Council (FEC) also approved several other education-related initiatives, including an augmentation of about N118.31 billion for the completion of the Nigeria — National Library of Nigeria headquarters complex, the establishment of the Nigerian Academy for the Gifted and Talented, and the deployment of an entrepreneurship certification programme in 14 federal universities. Additionally, FEC approved upgrades for the National Hospital, Abuja in Abuja and an amendment to decriminalise attempted suicide. NELFUND currently benefits over 1.2 million students and has disbursed over N322 billion in fees and allowances.
