The student offer is likely to boost adoption of Alphabet Inc.'s AI services among a key demographic, potentially increasing future subscription revenue and strengthening Alphabet Inc.'s competitive position against OpenAI and Anthropic. The move may pressure competitors to offer similar educational discounts, but the direct financial impact is modest given the free tier and student pricing.
Alphabet Inc. announced on August 19, 2026, that it is offering eligible college students a one-year free subscription to its Alphabet Inc. AI Plus plan (or Alphabet Inc. AI Pro in the US), along with a new Student Hub in Gemini and several new study tools. The offer is available in over 140 markets, including India, where students can claim the plan free for a year (valued at Rs 399/month) until December 31, 2026. The free plan includes access to Gemini Omni, higher usage limits, and 400GB of storage (5TB for US students on AI Pro). Alphabet Inc. also introduced a Student Hub within Gemini that centralizes study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes. New features include study notebooks that create personalized study plans, interactive 3D visualizations, and Deep Research in Gemini Live for voice-based research. Alphabet Inc. is also offering a discounted bundle of Alphabet Inc. AI Pro and YouTube — YouTube Premium at up to 70% off. These moves aim to expand Gemini's adoption among students and compete with OpenAI and Anthropic in the AI assistant market.
