Lebanon extradites Assad-era general to Syria

On August 19, 2026, Lebanese authorities handed over Major General Adel Issa, a former senior Syrian army officer, to Syrian custody. This marks the first such transfer of an Assad-era military officer by Lebanon since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Issa, who commanded the Syrian army's 17th Division and later ground forces in Deir Ezzor, faces charges including intentional homicide, torture leading to death, and crimes aimed at inciting civil war. He was detained on August 8 after visiting the Syrian embassy in Beirut. The transfer follows months of pressure from Damascus and could set a precedent for other former officials. Syria has provided Lebanon a list of over 200 wanted former officers. A Damascus court recently sentenced Assad to death in absentia.
