NYC first West Nile case 2026

United States — New York City reported its first human case of West Nile virus in 2026, according to the United States — New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The infected resident, whose identity and condition were not disclosed, had spent time outdoors in the city and at several locations outside the five boroughs. The Health Department has detected West Nile virus in mosquitoes across all five boroughs since June, with over 1,000 positive mosquito pools citywide this year, nearly double the number at the same time last year. The department has conducted targeted mosquito-control operations in affected neighborhoods, including United States — Queens, United States — Staten Island, and United States — Brooklyn Bridge. Nationally, the United States — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 222 human cases of West Nile virus this year, primarily in United States — Arizona, United States — Texas, and United States — California. Health Commissioner Alister Martin urged New Yorkers to take precautions such as using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water. Most infected people show no symptoms, but about 1 in 150 can develop severe neurological disease.
