The charges against a prominent lawyer may affect his legal practice and reputation, but the direct market impact is limited. The case could indirectly influence ongoing extradition proceedings involving Mehul Choksi, potentially affecting legal strategies and timelines.
Indian criminal lawyer Vijay Aggarwal, who represents fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi in extradition proceedings, has been arrested and charged in London with four counts of sexual assault involving two women. His personal assistant, Manpreet Kaur, was also charged with two counts of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of sexual assault. The alleged incidents occurred on May 26 and August 9 at a serviced townhouse in Mayfair. Both were arrested on August 11 by the United Kingdom — Metropolitan Police and charged on August 13. They appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court and were remanded in custody, with a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled at Southwark Crown Court on September 10. Two other individuals were arrested and released on bail. Aggarwal has been representing Choksi in his extradition case in Belgium, where Choksi is held after being arrested in April 2025 on an extradition request from India. Choksi, uncle of Nirav Modi, is accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of around Rs 13,500 crore.
