Unitree's IPO and the CEO's optimistic outlook have intensified investor enthusiasm for the humanoid robot sector, driving significant share price volatility. The event underscores China's dominance in humanoid production and the potential for rapid growth in embodied AI, which could boost related technology and manufacturing stocks while heightening U.S.-China trade tensions.
At the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, Unitree Robotics CEO Xingxing Wang said the humanoid robot industry is approaching a 'ChatGPT moment' in embodied intelligence, where robots could complete about 80% of tasks in unfamiliar environments via voice or text commands. He estimated this breakthrough could occur within two to three years in an optimistic scenario, or five to ten years at the latest. Wang also cautioned that current robot software capabilities remain limited, citing the industry's biggest bottleneck as aligning large AI models with physical robots. The comments came a day after Unitree's blockbuster Shanghai listing, where shares soared nearly sixfold before falling 11% on Thursday. Wang He, founder of Galbot, predicted the sector's 'ChatGPT moment' by 2028. China accounts for 97% of global humanoid shipments, delivering over 40,000 in the first half of the year. The event highlighted China's ambitions in humanoid robotics amid U.S.-China technology rivalry, including a recent U.S. FCC ban on imports of foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots.
