Egypt's Egypt — National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), in partnership with Telecom Egypt and Huawei, completed Africa's first trial of mobile services using the 6GHz band (U6GHz). The trial involved operating Africa's first mobile base station on the 6GHz band and completing the first data call over the spectrum, achieving data speeds of approximately 1.7Gbps per user. The test is part of Egypt's efforts to evaluate the band's potential for high-capacity mobile services, supporting 5G evolution and future technologies. NTRA Executive President Mohamed Shamroukh noted that the U6GHz band is included in Egypt's long-term national spectrum plan for 2030-2035. The trial is not a commercial deployment but a technical evaluation to inform spectrum planning. It follows Egypt's February 2026 allocation of 410MHz of spectrum to mobile operators in a deal valued at nearly $3.5bn. The 6GHz band is being considered globally for mobile use, though some countries like India and the United States have allocated parts of it for Wi-Fi.
