The announcement of Bupa's new genomics pathway could strengthen its position in preventive healthcare and attract health-conscious consumers, potentially boosting its market share in the UK health insurance and services sector. The survey highlights a growing market for wearable health technology and the need for services that help interpret health data, which may benefit companies in the wearable tech and digital health industries.

Healthcare Wearable Technology Genomics

A survey of 2,000 UK adults commissioned by Cromwell Hospital, part of Bupa, found that 57% wear wearable technology to monitor health metrics such as heart rate, steps, sleep, and blood pressure. However, 23% of those who actively track their health do not understand most of the data, and 24% have ignored health alerts, with heart rate, activity, and stress warnings most commonly overlooked. Only 17% can interpret data related to irregular heart rhythms. The survey, conducted via OnePoll, also revealed that 28% of health trackers sought medical advice after an alert, and 21% of those found it indicated a serious health concern. In response to the growing use of wearables and the need for better understanding, Bupa announced it will launch a first-to-market genomics prevention-focused pathway for cardiovascular disease on 1 September 2026. This pathway will use DNA insights to identify individuals at increased risk and connect them with preventive services such as Bupa's Weight Management Plan. Dr Neil Srinivasan, consultant cardiologist at Cromwell Hospital, emphasized the importance of understanding wearable data and early diagnosis.
