Government Elections

Following the August 15 Nigeria — Osun State governorship election, which was widely praised as free and credible, the Nigeria — Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged to improve upon that performance in the 2027 general elections. INEC National Commissioner Mohammed Kudu Haruna gave this assurance during a solidarity visit by a coalition of civil society and youth groups coordinated by the African Centre for Justice and Human Rights. The coalition, led by Obed Agu, passed a vote of confidence in INEC and its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, citing institutional independence and transparent conduct. The groups urged INEC to sustain and improve the Osun standard, and commended President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for non-interference. INEC also pledged to deepen the use of technology in future elections.
