On August 21, 2026, the Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a USD 230 million loan agreement to modernise and expand India — Chennai's water supply and sanitation infrastructure. The project, named the India — Chennai Climate-Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project, will construct over 170 kilometres of pipelines, upgrade seven water pumping stations and 38 sewer pumping stations, and introduce digital monitoring and safety technologies. India — Chennai will become the first Indian city to deploy a comprehensive ring-main system for efficient water distribution. The loan was signed by Saurabh Singh, Deputy Secretary in the International — United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, on behalf of the Government of India, and Mio Oka, Country Director of ADB's India Resident Mission. The project aligns with India's urban development programmes, including the India — Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 and the Urban Challenge Fund.
