Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology, Lahore in Lahore on Friday, describing it as a long-awaited project to provide advanced cardiac treatment free of cost. The institute, which includes the Maryam Nawaz Heart Transplant Centre, features a hybrid catheterisation laboratory, internationally designed wards, and advanced cardiac equipment. Maryam announced the creation of a heart transplant fund, noting that a heart transplant can cost around $50,000, and said transplant procedures would begin from Saturday. She pledged free cardiac treatment for eligible patients in Punjab and highlighted other initiatives such as a home dialysis programme, a free stroke-prevention injection, the Pakistan — Punjab Air Ambulance service, and the Clinics on Wheels programme. She also noted that over 12,000 children had undergone surgeries in the past year and that 16 catheterisation laboratories are now operational across Punjab. The event underscores the provincial government's focus on expanding healthcare infrastructure and accessibility.
