The expansion is expected to enhance Amazon's brand trust and seller confidence in India, potentially boosting marketplace growth. It may also increase operational costs but reduce counterfeit-related losses and legal risks.

Amazon is expanding the operations of its Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU) in India to strengthen protection for its 1.7 million sellers and consumers. The unit, launched in June 2020, has pursued over 32,000 bad actors globally through civil litigation and criminal referrals. In 2025, Amazon helped identify, seize, and dispose of more than 15 million counterfeit products worldwide and conducted over 70 raids. The company also blocked 285 million suspected fake reviews and verified 2.7 billion product units as genuine through its transparency programme. Amazon has ongoing investigations with the United States — Federal Bureau of Investigation in India. The expansion aims to increase on-ground efforts and collaboration with local law enforcement ahead of the festive shopping season.
