The rapid distribution of a large, distressed portfolio by Citadel demonstrates its risk management capabilities and may reassure investors about its handling of market dislocations. The unwinding of Situational Awareness Partners's positions could contribute to continued volatility in AI-related stocks, though Citadel's efficient execution may mitigate broader market impact.
Citadel, led by Ken Griffin, has shed more than 80% (about $4 billion) of the risk from the portfolio it recently purchased from Leopold Aschenbrenner's AI-focused hedge fund, Situational Awareness Partners. The portfolio was acquired after Situational suffered heavy losses in its tech holdings, losing 67% of its value in July and being forced to unwind most of its $16 billion public equities book. Citadel completed nearly 100 block trades, including the largest intraday block trades of the year in 10 different names, to distribute the risk. Griffin emphasized the firm's ability to evaluate complex risks and execute with precision. Wellington Management Company, the flagship multi-strategy fund, gained 5.94% in July, up 12% for the year.
