A review published online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, highlights the disproportionate burden of gynecologic cancers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The review, authored by Dewi Setiawati, Wachyudi Muchsin, and Alfi Sophian, analyzed studies from 2015 to 2024 and found that LMICs account for approximately 94% of global cervical cancer deaths, with the highest mortality in East Africa. It identifies key drivers of survival disparities, including late-stage diagnosis, limited screening, inadequate radiotherapy infrastructure, workforce shortages, and restricted access to therapies. The authors propose cost-effective interventions such as single-dose HPV vaccination, screen-and-treat strategies, HPV self-sampling, radiotherapy expansion, and workforce development through international partnerships. They stress the need for policy-driven, system-level reforms and sustainable financing to embed these interventions into national cancer control policies.
