The collaboration is expected to enhance exploration efficiency and reduce risk for the three Norwegian oil and gas companies, potentially leading to new discoveries that could support long-term production and value creation. This could positively impact their stock valuations and the broader Norwegian energy sector, while also supporting the supplier industry and energy security for Europe.
Equinor, Aker BP and Vår Energi announced a strategic exploration collaboration on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) on 24 August 2026. The companies will combine expertise, data, technology and exploration capacity to pursue high-impact exploration opportunities. Over the next four to five years, they plan to mature and test approximately 20-25 exploration opportunities, with an ambition to drill around five high-impact exploration wells annually. The collaboration aims to increase the chances of major discoveries that can support new standalone field developments and long-term value creation, while helping sustain activity and expertise in the Norwegian supplier industry and maintaining reliable energy supplies to Europe as production is expected to decline after 2035 without new discoveries.
