The Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing its fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus. As of Saturday, the Democratic Republic of the Congo — Ministry of Public Health (Democratic Republic of the Congo) reported 5,514 cases and 2,642 deaths, including 317 deaths in the previous week, one of the highest weekly tolls. The outbreak, declared on May 15, is believed to have been spreading since February in the mining town of Mongbwalu. It is unfolding in challenging conditions with rebel threats, population movements, unpaid responders, community mistrust, and misinformation. On Friday, the country received over 16,000 doses of the RVSV-ZEBOV vaccine vaccine, which was effective against a different Ebola strain; the World Health Organization will also use it in clinical trials for a Bundibugyo virus vaccine, though its efficacy against this strain is uncertain.
