Osun election violence relief fund committee

Following the 15 August 2026 Nigeria — Osun State governorship election, which was marred by violence, Governor Ademola Adeleke approved a N500 million Election Violence Victims Relief Endowment Fund. On 24 August 2026, the Nigeria — Osun State Government constituted a 10-member committee, chaired by Speaker Adewale Egbedun, to verify claims from victims of election-related violence and oversee disbursement of the fund. The committee includes representatives from civil society, the Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force, the United States — United States Department of State, and state ministries. It will receive petitions, verify eligibility, and recommend relief to verified victims. The initiative responds to widespread violence that reportedly caused deaths, injuries, and property destruction before and after the election. Reports by Development Media International identified 73 violent incidents and 29 deaths, while Amnesty International warned of escalating violence. Post-election clashes continued, including a reported killing of five people at a motor park in Ikire on 24 August. The fund aims to support victims regardless of political affiliation, religion, ethnicity, gender, or social status.
