On 22 August 2026, a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the A66 near Middlesbrough collided head-on with a marked police armed response vehicle, killing both officers inside, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough of United States — Cleveland Division of Police, and all five occupants of the Passat.
