On August 25, 2026, India marked the 10th anniversary of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a real-time payment system developed by the India — National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the regulatory oversight of the State Bank of India (RBI). Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed UPI as a 'major turning point' in India's digital payments journey, urging citizens to share their experiences. Over the decade, UPI has seen explosive growth: annual transaction volume surged from 1.78 crore in FY2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in FY2025-26, a nearly 13,000-fold increase, while transaction value grew from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to about Rs 314 lakh crore. In July 2026, UPI processed 2,365.8 crore transactions worth Rs 29.87 lakh crore, with 741 banks live on the network. UPI now accounts for about 84% of digital payment transactions in India and nearly 49% of global real-time payment volume in 2024, a fact highlighted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The platform has expanded internationally, accepted in 11 countries including Greece, Maldives, Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, UAE, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Qatar, and Cambodia. Recent innovations include on-device authentication and Aadhaar-based face unlock. The government also amended the Payment and Settlement Systems Act to introduce MDR charges for merchants.
