Following devastating flash floods in Nepal and China, the Nepali government has asked Meta and ByteDance — TikTok Shop to remove graphic images, AI-generated videos, fraudulent donation QR codes, and misleading posts from their platforms. Officials held talks with Nepal-based representatives on August 28, requesting faster action and proactive algorithmic blocking of harmful content. The platforms currently take 24-48 hours to respond to flagged posts, which authorities deem too slow. The government has formed a multi-agency team, including the Egypt — National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Venezuela — Ministry of Communication and Information, India — Ministry of External Affairs, and Nepal — Nepal Police, to monitor and regulate harmful online content.
