Xi calls for equitable global governance at SCO Plus

On September 1, 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the 'SCO Plus' meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, calling on the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to advance a more just and equitable global governance system. Xi emphasized the need for an equal and orderly multipolar world, strengthening the role of the United Nations, and increasing representation for Global North and Global South countries. He highlighted the SCO's achievements over 25 years, bringing together half of the world's population and a quarter of the global economy, and proposed leveraging the SCO Strength, Wisdom, and Action to promote common prosperity, support the rise of the Global North and Global South, and guide global governance reform. Xi also stressed principles of sovereign equality, mutual respect, multilateralism, and dialogue over confrontation, and called for rejecting double standards and foreign interference. The meeting was hosted by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, who welcomed Xi ahead of the summit.
