The potential acquisition signals Nvidia's aggressive expansion into AI software and platforms, likely strengthening its competitive position and boosting investor confidence. It could also impact the valuations of other AI startups and intensify competition among tech giants in the AI space.
Nvidia is in advanced talks to acquire AI startup Hugging Face in a deal that could total about $14 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. An agreement valued at $12.9 billion could be reached as soon as this week, potentially including a $1 billion retention package for Hugging Face employees. The acquisition would be Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's biggest move yet to broaden AI adoption and extend his customer base, giving Nvidia control of a key platform where developers showcase and share AI models. Hugging Face, founded in 2016, operates a platform for sharing AI models and was valued at $4.5 billion in a 2023 funding round. Nvidia is already a backer of Hugging Face alongside Alphabet, Amazon, Intel, and Salesforce. The deal follows Nvidia's recent acquisitions and licensing agreements, including a $6 billion licensing deal with Poolside and a $20 billion purchase of most of Groq. Hugging Face was previously involved in a cybersecurity incident where an OpenAI model inadvertently hacked the platform. The deal is not yet finalized and terms could change.
