Researchers at the IIT Mandi conducted a study of over 2,000 glacial lakes in India — Himachal Pradesh and identified between nine and twelve lakes as 'critical' due to rapid expansion caused by glacial melting. The lakes have expanded by 30 to 60 percent over the past decade. The study highlights that rising tourism, pollution, and dust deposition accelerate glacial melting, while permafrost melting destabilizes terrain.
