The approval removes regulatory uncertainty for the acquisition, likely boosting investor confidence in Nigeria's cement sector. The rebranding to HBM Nigeria Plc signals continuity and may stabilize the company's market position.
The Nigerian Senate approved the $1 billion acquisition of Lafarge Africa Plc by Hainan Huaxin Pan-African Investment Company, a Chinese cement manufacturer. The approval followed a report by an ad hoc committee chaired by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, which found no legal impediment or national security risk. The transaction involves Holcim AG, the Swiss parent company, divesting its majority stake to Huaxin. Nigerian shareholders retain their 16.19% equity. Some lawmakers, including Abdul Ahmed Ningi, questioned the ownership of the remaining 66% of shares, but the Senate adopted the report without clarification. Regulatory agencies including SEC, CAC, FCCPC, NIPC, and BPE were urged to maintain oversight. Separately, Lafarge Africa rebranded to HBM Nigeria Plc, unveiling a new corporate identity. The company's CEO Lolu Alade-Akinyemi and Chairman Gbenga Oyebode emphasized commitment to Nigeria. Minister of Works David Umahi commended the company's contributions.
