The report itself is unlikely to directly move markets, but it provides insights into how companies are adapting to evolving sustainability regulations, which could influence corporate compliance strategies and demand for legal and consulting services. It may modestly benefit G&A and Ropes & Gray by reinforcing their thought leadership in the ESG space.
Governance & Accountability Institute (G&A) and global law firm Ropes & Gray released a joint research report titled 'Side by Side: Sustainability and Legal - A Look Inside Two Corporate Functions Navigating Complexity & Uncertainty Together.' The study, based on a survey and interviews with sustainability and legal professionals from 35 leading companies conducted between September 2025 and February 2026, examines how increasing sustainability-related regulation is driving greater collaboration between corporate sustainability and legal teams. Key findings include that 39% of sustainability functions now report into legal, 87% of sustainability leaders report increased interactions with legal in the past year, and none expect their role to decrease. The research was conducted during a period of regulatory flux, including the pause of United States — California's climate disclosure laws, the stay of SEC climate disclosure rules, and revisions to the EU's CSRD. The report highlights benefits and challenges of cross-functional collaboration and offers recommendations for improvement.
