Wintermute registers US broker-dealer

Wintermute's broker-dealer registration could increase competition among liquidity providers in U.S. securities markets, potentially leading to tighter spreads and deeper liquidity for ETFs and other digital asset-linked products. It also signals growing convergence between crypto and traditional finance, which may accelerate institutional adoption of tokenized securities.
Wintermute, a major cryptocurrency market maker, registered its U.S. subsidiary Wintermute as a broker-dealer with the United States — United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the United States — Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in August 2026. The registration allows the New York-based subsidiary to trade equities and equity options for its own account, provide liquidity to U.S. securities exchanges and OTC counterparties, and pursue market-making roles on venues including the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. Wintermute can also self-clear digital asset securities transactions and act as an authorized participant for exchange-traded products, including crypto-linked ETFs. The move positions Wintermute to participate in the growing tokenized securities market and to connect crypto liquidity with traditional finance. Founder and CEO Evgeny Gaevoy emphasized the firm's long-term conviction that digital assets and traditional finance will integrate more deeply. Wintermute already handles over $10 billion in average daily trading volume across more than 60 venues globally. The registration follows Wintermute's earlier expansions into tokenized gold market-making and prediction market liquidity. This move aligns with a broader trend of crypto firms acquiring regulated U.S. securities operations, as seen with Ripple's acquisition of Hidden Road, GSR's acquisition of Equilibrium Capital Services, and Crypto.com's acquisition of Watchdog Capital.
