Death of Alfred Bandele Kasunmu

Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, a distinguished Nigerian legal scholar, advocate, and former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Nigeria — Lagos State, died peacefully on August 9, 2026, at the age of 92. His death was announced by his family and confirmed by the Baptist Academy Old Students Association. Kasunmu had a multifaceted career spanning academia, public service, and private practice. He was a pioneer lecturer at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), later becoming a professor and Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos. He served as Attorney-General of Nigeria — Lagos State from 1975 to 1978 and was elevated to Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1978 (some sources say 1979). He founded Professor A.B. Kasunmu s Chambers in 1978, which became a prominent law firm. He authored influential legal texts and mentored generations of lawyers. His death marks the end of an era in Nigerian legal education and advocacy.
